El 12 de febrero celebramos el Día de la Juventud...

Se celebra el Día de la Juventud en Venezuela, en conmemoración a la Batalla de La Victoria, ganada en 1814 por José Félix Ribas con jóvenes del Seminario y de la Universidad de Caracas. El 10 de febrero de 1947, la Asamblea Constituyente Decreta celebrar el 12 de febrero el Día de la Juventud. El acto central se realiza en la ciudad de La Victoria, en la plaza principal que lleva el nombre del héroe José Félix Ribas y donde existe el grupo escultórico integrado por él y varios jóvenes que reciben instrucciones sobre el manejo del fusil.

Este monumento lo decretó el Presidente Andueza Palacio, pero se vino a erigir durante el gobierno de Joaquín Crespo, inaugurándose el 13 de febrero de 1895. El escultor fue Eloy Palacios. La historia registra como ese día un puñado de universitarios y seminaristas, al mando de José Félix Ribas y Campo Elías se cubrieron de gloria al derrotar en La Victoria a Boves y Morales el 12 de febrero de 1814. Después de haber dejado bien protegida a Caracas mediante la construcción de una «ciudadela» formada por 25 manzanas en tomo a la Plaza Mayor, Ribas reúne un puñado de jóvenes inexpertos en el uso del fusil, armados con el coraje que inspira la defensa de la patria y con ellos, los soldados que no pasan de 1.500, marcha a La Victoria a enfrentarse a las tropas Realistas, que tienen unos 2.500 hombres.

La batalla comenzó antes de las 8 de la mañana y a las cinco de la tarde aún no se había decidido por ningún bando. Finalmente, cuando ya empieza a oscurecer y los patriotas están más comprometidos resistiendo los ataques de Morales, aparece Vicente Campo Elías con un valioso refuerzo de 220 soldados, lo cual fue suficiente para que con el empuje de Mariano Montilla, Cedeño, los hermanos Padrón, Campo Elías y el propio Ribas, se obtuviera el espléndido triunfo de La Victoria.

Unos cien patriotas murieron, entre ellos el Coronel Rivas Dávila. La de La Victoria fue una batalla que, si se atiende a la enorme diferencia numérica, era imposible que ganaran los patriotas; sin embargo, el coraje, el encendido patriotismo de Ribas, «airado e imponente como el ángel terrible de Exequias», así como el oportuno auxilio de Campo Elías, lograron el milagro, el triunfo de la juventud que heroicamente se inmoló en esa batalla impide el intento realista de cortar las comunicaciones entre Caracas y Valencia. Como estímulo a esos jóvenes, el Libertador otorgó al hijo de José Félix Ribas, el título de Capitán vivo y efectivo de Infantería de Línea, con el goce de sueldo de tal desde hoy, y con la antigüedad del día en que empezare a hacer el servicio. Lo admirable es que el Capitán Ribas Palacios apenas tenía tres años de edad. Ese mismo día, el Libertador, que estaba en Valencia, en una emocionada proclama, titulaba a José Félix Ribas “El Vencedor de los Tiranos en La Victoria...
